Why Is My A/C Blowing Hot Air?

There are few things more frustrating than getting into a hot car, cranking up the air conditioning, and being met with lukewarm air. A broken air conditioning system is one of the most annoying automotive issues to deal with. While it’s not strictly necessary to drive the car, A/C is considered essential during the summer months by most. Here are a few possible reasons why your air conditioning isn’t keeping you cool.

Low Refrigerant

Low or leaking refrigerant is a common cause of air conditioning system failure. A/C refrigerant, the fluid responsible for cooling your car’s interior, circulates through the system, constantly expanding and contracting. This refrigerant is contained within a closed loop, preventing evaporation over time.

However, as A/C components age and wear down, they can develop leaks that allow refrigerant to escape the system, depleting the supply. With low refrigerant, the air conditioning system loses its cooling properties, resulting in warm air being blown into the cabin. Topping off the refrigerant restores the system’s functionality, but failing to address the original leak means the new refrigerant will eventually leak out as well. The best course of action is to bring your car to a professional for a repair and recharge, ensuring the issue is resolved at its source.

Clogged Condenser

The condenser relies on air moving through it to create cooling, so over time, it’s natural for it to become gunked up with dirt, dust, and debris; it’ll lose its effectiveness. If the problem is a broken condenser, it will need to be replaced entirely.

Faulty Electrical System/Fuses

Often being some of the most frustrating issues to repair, electrical malfunctions are a common culprit of faulty A/C function. Blown fuses, bad relays, or broken wires stop the compressor clutch from engaging. Diagnosing electrical issues can be complex, so we recommend leaving it to a trusted professional.

Bad Compressor

Regardless of the amount of refrigerant your vehicle contains, it’s useless without a functioning compressor to circulate it through the system. Compressors naturally wear out over time and eventually cease to operate. Additionally, they’re prone to failure after an extended period of inactivity. To prevent your compressor from seizing during the colder months, it’s advisable to run it periodically for 10-15 minutes. This ensures that it’s ready for use as soon as the temperatures rise.

Signs It’s Time to Recharge Your A/C
